Bridges and waters are the common thread of this ten days architecture tour: Pantha rhei – everything is flowing. Worldwide bridges are built in terms of shaping new forms of urbanism and on this tour we will get the notion of progress in the USA. Let’s get moving!

The excursion starts in Detroit , one of the former most important industrial cities of the world. Planned in 1806 as City Beautiful on a concentric plot - an unsusual plannning for american towns - Detroit was developing to an industrial hub. Though, the rapidly rising to becoming the Motorcity was followed by a steady declining since the 1960ies, a development which is seen in its building culture and the remains of it. Art Déco skyscrapers, theatres, factories and mansions are artifacts of the prosperity of the beginning of the 20th century, buildings by Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Victor Gruen show the influence of modern European architects after World War II and the times of urban renewal. Likewise exciting is the shape of the postindustrial age: Detroit River is clean, the city has thinned out, eventually nature takes over the free lots. Creatives have moved to Detroit implementing new ideas - urban renewal in these days means urban gardening and make the city blooming again.

After Detroit, Michigan we are heading by bus to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, located at the confluence of two rivers. Known for its bridges and metal facades the city refers to its history as former steal industry hub. One of the highlights will be the visiting of the nearby Kaufmann House by Frank Lloyd Wright built in 1939, one of the most impressive examples of modern architecture and worldwide famous as the Fallingwater House. Another great opportunity our trip is offering will be the Andy Warhol Museum, showing the biggest collection of the Pop artist’s work. Andy Warhol was born and grew up in Pittsburgh.

Our very special USA tour is culminating in New York City; Though, an architecture all time high the city’s shape improved fast in the last decade: The National September 11 Memorial on Ground Zero, Santiago Calatrava’s World Trade Center PATH Station, the new shaping of super slender skyscrapers or the Hudson Yards Quarter are impressive new landmarks. Staying at The Standard Hotel on Highline we can catch the wonderful view over Hudson River and Highline Park and walk over easily to the Whitney Museum of American Art by Renzo Piano. The Museum of Modern Art - after a conversion reopened - and the New Art Museum by SANAA in Brooklyn are on our schedule and, last but not least some rooftop bars; In all three of them we will enjoy overlooking the cities and enjoy our tour!
